Memoirs of the PAP

Mrs. Ekadashi Kaluram Mhatre
My name is Ekadashi Kaluram Mhatre. I am from Koparkhairane village. I was born in Koparkhairane itself, in 1960. Before CIDCO's arrival, our life was good. We were able to grow rice in fields, catch fishes, grow vegetables. Our life was good. We used to grow vegetables like okra, colocasia, bhaaja. Seafood like crabs, mudskippers, eels, squids could be caught in the creek. We were able to sell those when the catch was big enough. We used to sell such seafoods as squids, eels, tolakaa, mudskippers in the markets. Around every spring tide, we used to go catch clams. Then we used to bury them in one place in the mudflats. And around neap tide, we used to collect those clams in sacks and take them to Thane, Dadar. Lots of people from the neighbourhood used to go sell clams.
This alone was our livelihood - go to the creek, catch whatever seafoods available and use rice from the fields the whole year. For both the meals. For steamed rice as well as bhaakari. This alone was our livelihood. From the time CIDCO took away our land, our families had to suffer starvation endlessly because they landfilled the creeks and dumped murram in our paddy fields. Then there were no fish to catch in the creeks and there was no soil to grow anything. And they even landfilled our kitchen gardens where we used to grow vegetables. They dumped murram in the fields where we used to grow rice. In the very fields where we used to grow rice!
When CIDCO took away our lands, our people took out morchas, urging not to take away our lands. "Our families' survival is dependent on these lands". Then the heavily armed police came and thrashed them. They broke into people's houses and beat them up. Broke their legs. They fired their guns in the air, too. They had beaten up even our kids. CIDCO took away our land by force. No one sold their land. Our land was taken away by CIDCO by force. We were against giving our lands to CIDCO. We did not consent to CIDCO taking away our lands. We opposed but they used violence and took away our lands. Then people had to keep quiet for the fear of the force. Resistance died because people were terrified. People's voice was suppressed because many lost legs and many suffered stone injuries. Then people got terrified. Because what poor people like us could do!
CIDCO took away our lands, landfilled them, dumped murram on them and started constructing buildings. Soon the village was surrounded on all sides by those buildings. We suffered a great deal mentally because all we had was that land. No one in our family had a job or anything. In our family, neither my father nor my husband had a job. We used to work as labourers to earn our livelihood. Before CIDCO's arrival our life was good. We used to get a bellyful to eat. Everything was good. After CIDCO arrived, we would get one meal in a day sometimes and other times, not even that. On some days, there would be wages to earn; other days, none.
CIDCO had issued notices but we didn't get any notice. Our land was in our grandfather's name, so we didn't get any notice. We never knew anything about those notices. CIDCO took away our land. We used to grow cartfull rice on that land. Till 1980-81, we used to grow cartful rice in our farm. We didn't get notices or anything. We didn't get money. No notice, nothing. We didn't get anything. We haven't received even five paisas till date. We didn't get any plots, we didn't get any money in return for our land.
Till late, we continued to survive earning our livelihood as labourers. We haven't received anything from CIDCO. What compensation and what-not CIDCO has given, we have no idea at all. We lost our land but we haven't received anything in return till date. So many years have passed. After grabbing our land, CIDCO has not provided for our children's education either. Nor have they given any jobs to any of our family members - neither my father, nor my husband. We survived earning our livelihood as labourers.
People from our village had told us that we will get a plot [meant for landless people]. Our names etc. were taken too. But nothing has come out of it till date. We had applied. We had given all the documents. We had given all information like which village we belong to, our origins etc. Our signatures were taken. We had filled the form but we haven't received a crumb till date.
I wish to tell our new generation that CIDCO took away our land. They didn't provide for your education. They didn't provide anything. What are we going to do henceforth? Get educated and work for our community!

सौ. एकादशी काळुराम म्हात्रे, कोपरखैरणे
माजा पूर्ण नाव एकादशी काळुराम म्हात्रे. माजे गावाचा नाव कोपरखैरणे. माजा जल्म कोपरखैरणे गावातच झाले, १९६० साली. सिडको येण्याचे आदी आमची चांगली परिस्तिती होती. आमाला शेतात भात पिकवता येतुता, मासली भेटतुती, भाजीपाला लावता येतुता. आमची परिस्तिती चांगली होती. भेंडं, डेटी - आलूवड्यांची पाना, आणि भाजं अशा भाज्या लावाचू आमी. चिंबोरी, निवठी, चिलीस, माकली, अशा मच्छ्या भेटाच्या खाडीत. जास्त भेटली तर विकालासुद्धा नेता येतुत्या. माकली, चिलीस, टोलका, निवठ्या आयशे प्रकारच्या मच्छी मार्किटान विकाला न्यायचू. आमी दर उधानाला शिंपल्याना जावाचू. आनी मंग त्या हानून खारीन एके जागंमधी गारुन ठेवाचू. आनी उदान झाला का त्या शिंपल्यांच्या गोनी भरून ठाण्याला, दादरला घेऊन जायाचो. आसपासची चिक्कार लोकं जायची शिंपल्या विकाला.
आमची मिलकत ईच - खारीन जायाचा, काय निवठ्या-चिंबोऱ्या हानाच्या आनी शेतातले जमिनीचा भात वर्षबं तोच वापराचा. दोन टायमाला. भाकरीना पन आनी भाताला पन. ईच मिलकत होती आमाला. शिडकोनी जमीन घेतली तवापासून आमचे पोरा-बालांचं खान्याचं-बिन्याचं जाम हालावल झयलं कारन खाड्या पन भरत हानल्या आनी जमिनीपन मुरूम टाकून घेतल्या. मग खारीतली काय मच्छी भेटली नय आनी जमिनीन कय पिकवाला भेटला नय. आनी आमचं ते वाडं-बिडं होतं भाजी लावाचं ते पन भरून टाकलं. आमचे भात लावन्याचे जमिनीन मुरूम टाकला - आमी जी भाता लावतुतू नं ते जमिनीन.
शिडकोनी जमिनी घेतल्या तवा आमचे लोकांचं मोर्चे निगलं का आमच्या जमिनी नको घेव. "आमचे ये जमिनीवं पोट भरतंय पोरा-बालांचा". तर मिलीट्रीचं पोलीस येऊन त्यांना मारहान केली. लोखांचे घरान शिरून मारलं त्याना. त्यांच्या तंगऱ्या मोरल्या होत्या. गोल्या पण झारल्या अशा वरचे वर. आनी पोरा-बालाना सुद्धा मारलं. शिडकोनी आमची जमीन हिसकवून घेतली. जमीन कोनीच दिलेली नाय. आमची जमीन शिडकोनी हिसकवून घेतलेली हाय. शिडकोला जमिनी द्यावाला आमचा विरोद होता. आमचा ऐसा मत नवता का आमच्या जमिनी घ्या म्हनून. विरोद होता पन मारहान करुनशी घेतल्या जमिनी. मग काय दबाव आल्यामुलं बसली गप लोका. विरोद बंद झाला कारन का तं घाबराला लागली लोका. दबावली लोका कारन कोनची तंगरी तुटतंय तं कोनचे डगरांचा मार लागतंय. तं मग लोका घाबरली. कारन आपुन गरीब लोका काय करनार?
शिडकोनी जमिनी घेतल्या, भराव केला, मुरूम टाकला आणि मग बिल्डिंगी बांदाला सुरवात केली. मग गाव राला मदीन आनी सगलीकरं बिल्डिंगी बांदल्या. आमचे मनावं म्होटा परिनाम झाला कारन आमाला तेवढी जमीनच होती. आमचे घरात कोनी नोकरी वाला नवता, कय नवता. आमचे कुटुंबांची मानसा, बाबा होता तो पन नोकरीला नवता, काय नवता आनी माजा नवरा पन नोकरीला नवता. आमी मजुरी करून हातावं पोट भराचू. शिडको येयाचे अगोदर आमचा जीवन चंगला होता. आमाला पोटभरून जेवाला भेटतुता. सगला चंगला होता. शिडको आल्याचे नंतर आमाला एक वेल जेवाला भेटतुता तं एक वेल भेटत नवता. कदी मजुरी भेटतुती तं कदी मजुरी भेटत नवती.
शिडकोनी नोटीशी पाठवल्या होत्या पन आमाला नोटीस नय आली. आमची जमीन आमचे आजोबाचे नावावर होती तं आमाला नोटीस भेटली नाय. काय पत्ताच नय आमाला नोटिशींचा. शिडकोनी आमची जमीन घेतली. आमी ते जमिनीतून गाडीभर भात पिकिवतुतू. आयशी-एक्याऐशी सालापरेंत गाडीभर भात पिकिवतुतू आमी आमचे शेतान. नोटीस-बिटिस काईच नाय आमाला. पैसा नय भेटला. नोटीस नय, कय नय. काईच नाय भेटला आमाला. आमाला पाच पैशे पन नय भेटलेलं अजुनपरेंत. आमाला प्लॉट पन नय भेटलं, न जमिनीचा पैसा पन नय भेटला.
मजुरी करून अजुनपरेंत आमचा हातावर निवार चालू होता. आमाला काईच भेटलेला नय शिडकोकरून. शिडकोनी काय मोबदला दिले, काय केले, आमाला काईच माईत नय. जमीन गेली पन आमाला हातात काय भेटलाच नय अजुनपरेंत. येवडी वरसा झाली. शिडकोनी जमीन ताब्यात घेतल्यापासून आमचे पोराना शिक्शनासाटीसुदा पैसा नय दिला. आनी आमचे घरातले कोना माणसाना - माजा नवरा होता, माजा वडील होता - कोनाला नोकरीला लावलेला नाय. आमी मजुरी करूनशी हातावं निवार केला.
आमाला असा गावचे लोकावी सांगितला होता का तुमाला [भूमिहीन लोकांसाठीचा] प्लॉट भेटनार हाय. आमची नावा-बिवा लिवून पन घेतलिती. पण त्याचा अजुनपरेंत काय पत्ताच नाय. अर्ज केलता. अर्ज सगलं पत्र दिलं होतं. सगली माहिती का आमी येच गावची हाव, कुटली हाव, काय ते सगला दिला होता. सगल्या सह्या-बिया झेउन गेलं होतं. फॉर्म भरला होता पन एक तुकरा भेटलेला नय आमाला अजूनपरेंत.
मी आपले नवीन पिढीला संदेश देतंय का आपली जमीन घेतली शिडकोनी. आपल्याला शिक्शनासाटी पैसा नाय दिला. काईच नाय दिला. आपुन काय कराचा याचेपुढं? जाम शिकाचा न आपले समाजाचेसाटी काम कराचा!
